Chris Hemsworth and Tom Hiddleston for “Avengers: Superstars to Superheroes”

Personal theory;
At the time Odin said this line, both Thor and Loki were still young and children. Odin still planned to see them grow up to bring a peace between the jötunn and Aesir. Odin said they were both born to be kings. Only one could take the throne of Asgard. Loki would learn of his true destiny when he was older and in the mean time, Odin prepares both of them for a position of power, not just his heir.
What was Odin’s master plan? My guess; Odin was waiting for Laufey to die of natural causes and with no proper heir a power vacuum would be created. Then Odin would break the news to Loki, telling him to claim the Frost Giant throne. Loki would ascend to the throne and any frost giant officials that disagreed would be dealt with by means of Aesir aide. Thor would lead Asgard and Loki would rule Jötunnheim. The two brothers would remain close and provide an example of coexistence for both races which would then live in peace, hopefully, for the rest of time.
Trouble is, Odin had never planned that Loki be so utterly horrified when he learned of his origins. For Loki, it was like a rug being pulled out from under his feet and set the stage for the beginnings of a psychotic break. Learning he was a key part of bringing peace didn’t help much. In his head, Loki never got past the word ‘part’. To him this meant that his adoptive parents never loved him because he was only a political tool. Under this realization Loki tries to prove that he is of worth beyond this plan. That he can do something worthy that has nothing to do with this plan. And what’s more outside of this plan than killing the Frost Giants? And this also serves as a metaphoric method for Loki purge himself of the heritage he so despised. Of course he’d need to the frost giants set up as villains for his adoptive father, who wanted peace with them, to see this as a good choice of action. The rest is history.
Odin’s real failing came later when both boys were hanging off the edge of the bridge. Although his course of action here is still not completely unsympathetic. Any other time, telling Thor or Loki ‘no’ would lead to a temper tantrum and worst. The real area where Odin messed up was in underestimating Loki’s mental state at this stage. Loki’s mind started breaking when he found out he was Jötunn, and from then until now, the cracks in his mind have only been spider webbing further. Now he’s reached a point where this crack must be mended or it will break completely. At any other time, some of daddy’s tough love would be just the thing, but not now. Odin has no idea that Loki’s mental state is so far gone that suicide is an option. A suicide that probably won’t work and Loki more than likely knows this. But after this rejection, it’s worth a try.
Over all, while Odin’s actions weren’t exactly for the best in Loki’s case, I don’t think he deserve as much retaliation as he’s getting from the fans as a whole. Odin did what he thought was best, just like any parent would. And sometimes, just as for real parents, what is stellar parenting for one child just doesn’t work on another. I know it’d be nice to have someone to blame for tumblr’s current favorite child but let’s not get out of control. And I’ll be the first to admit that I’m overcome with an unhealthy love for the guy to whom ‘little shit’ has become fan accepted term of endearment. What I’m trying to say, on a more social conscious scale, is that it is more than a little unnerving to witness someone under-go a psychotic break (a disturbingly realistic one at that, good work Tom) and stand by to see the devastating scale of the aftermath (the entirety of ‘Avengers’). But Odin doesn’t deserve to be so berated for it. Yes, from the outside and in retrospect, it’s easy to point the finger. Isn’t it always? But given his situation and what he knew at the time, Odin made the most informed decision he could.
Yes.
This is a cool theory, but I totally disagree. If Odin had truly wanted Loki to ascend to the throne of Jotunheim, he would have prepared Loki for that eventuality. Instead, Odin allowed Loki and Thor to both grow up thinking that Frosts Giants were horrible, monstrous creatures. There’s no indication that Loki ever learned anything about the culture of Jotunheim, either. Maybe I’m influenced by reading too much Norse mythology, but Odin has always been a god with shady motivations. He’s an ‘ends justify the means’ type of leader. And he is clever. Call me cynical, but I tend to go with the explanation given in the comic Blood Brothers, where the following exchange takes place.
Loki: “Simply this, then: how best to make a hero? Give him a means by which he might define himself so. Set up a field of black against which his white will be yet more blinding.”
Odin: “You speak of Thor.”
Loki: “Yes, I speak of Thor. My stepbrother, filled with energy and ambition. How to mold him according to your will? Why, mold a villain alongside him . Take into your bosom a small and helpless babe, prod him with temptation, reward him with ridicule, expect the very worst from him and and refuse to see any good, lest it flourish thereby.”
Odin: “You are deranged.”
Loki: ”Am I? Then look at me, father, and tell me plain that I was not brought to your court for the sole purpose of galvanizing Thor’s goodness.”
In the comic, Odin does not deny it. Honestly, I find that it makes more sense than the idea that clever, wise Odin would expect Loki to be fine and dandy with the idea of leaving Asgard to rule a frozen planet that he’s never been allowed to even visit in order to rule of a race of people that he’s been raised to think of as monsters. And that, ladies and gents, is why I think Odin is an A+ Terrible and Manipulative Father.
Interesting theories, and in my opinion, a grain of truth to both of them… though I think Odin didn’t really count on things turning out the way they did. Because even if he did plan on making Loki a Jotunn king, it would still be hard to grow up in a society filled with hatred for the Jotunns… much like it was difficult to grow up and realize you’re gay in, let’s say, 19th century, when ‘practicing sodomy’ was still a capital crime. There’s nothing bad about being gay… but if you grow up hearing about how bad it is from everyone you know… then you can’t help but accept that idea.
So… I think that Odin’s failing, IF he really did plan to make Loki a Jotunn king, was not telling him from the beginning, not changing or at least attempting to dispel the racial prejudice in Asgard.
Then again, Odin DOES think that Jotunns are evil as well ^^; which kind of makes another point for me: I think Odin had completely different plans for Loki when he took him in. I think he was weary from battling the Jotunns, injured and tired and all he wanted was to go home and Odin-sleep it all off. Killing a baby did not seem right at that time. So he took the baby with him, probably thinking ‘I’ll deal with ‘it’ later.’ What he did not count on was a strong-willed wife: I can imagine Frigga stomping her foot and being the one who decided they were going to raise Loki properly, not as a prisoner, but as their baby :D after all… she was used to taking care of the children Odin managed to drag in (*cough*Thor*cough*).
And I think it’s much more difficult to properly ‘use’ a child you raise as your own, even if that hadn’t been your idea from the very start. I do think Odin loves/loved Loki like a son, because let’s face it… a cute, big-eyed, underappreciated and self-conscious kid is too adorable to NOT love, and several centuries are a long time to keep being indifferent to that kid. And Odin might’ve actually feared Loki’s reaction, so he kept stalling and waiting for the ‘right moment’ or something… and in the end, Loki found out about his origins on his own.

I was just going through my Art of Iron Man 2, and came across this - Agent Coulson’s SHIELD clearance/ID card. I must have missed it the past 100 times that I’ve read through it, since it isn’t too big [there better be some Coulson art in Art of The Avengers otherwise I’m going to rage - there was only one drawing of him in the Art of Thor :(]. It’s official - his first name isn’t Agent, Tony :P
I wonder what the J stands for? James? Jonathan? Jerome? Jesus?
We also have his birthday. So, he would have been 47 in The Avengers… Wait, no, not would have been - HE IS 47!!! I refuse to believe that he’s no longer here! Bring on all the crazy theories of his survival!!!

OH my God.
LOL. Yeah. I can so imagine Tony taking the chance to get drunk (again) with someone.
Even if it’s Loki.
And all the other Avengers are putting on their best ‘wtf oh yeah it’s just usual Stark’ glares.

…when Pepper asks Coulson “What about that cellist of yours?” or something like that… and he answers, and the subtitles say “HE moved back to Portland.”
He.
HE.
I can’t even.

LOLOLOLOLOL.
I want that toilet.
Cut from the movie, it turns out Loki was originally supposed to have told Laufey exactly who he was.
Check it:
I would love to see this. SO BAD.
